Gold Star Pokémon Cards: List, How to Spot Them & Value

Gold Star Pokémon cards from the EX era explained: how to recognize the star, which sets have them, why they're rare, and what affects their value.

Gold Star cards are some of the most prized Pokémon cards from the 2000s. They're shiny (alternate-color) Pokémon marked with a small star next to the name, and they were notoriously hard to pull.

How to recognize a Gold Star card

  • A ★ star symbol right after the Pokémon's name (e.g. "Charizard ★")
  • The Pokémon is shown in its shiny coloration
  • Holo artwork
  • From the EX era (2004–2007) and POP Series promo packs

Don't confuse this with the star rarity symbol at the bottom of the card, which every rare has. Gold Star cards have the star in the name bar.

Which sets have Gold Stars

Gold Stars appeared in EX-era sets from EX Team Rocket Returns (2004) through EX Power Keepers (2007), plus POP Series 5 and POP Series 6 promo packs. Some well-known examples:

  • Charizard ★ (EX Dragon Frontiers)
  • Rayquaza ★ (EX Deoxys)
  • Umbreon ★ and Espeon ★ (POP Series 5)
  • Mudkip ★, Torchic ★, Treecko ★ (EX Team Rocket Returns)
  • Mewtwo ★ (EX Holon Phantoms)

Why they're valuable

  • Very low pull rates: often around one per several booster boxes
  • Popular Pokémon in shiny colors
  • Smaller print runs than modern sets
  • Condition: many were played or stored loose, so clean copies are scarce

Checking a Gold Star's condition

EX-era holos have a specific weakness: the foil surface scratches easily, and many cards were played in decks without sleeves. Before you price yours:

  • Tilt it under a light and look for fine scratches across the holo artwork.
  • Check the back edges for white chipping; the dark blue back shows wear clearly.
  • Look at centering: EX-era cards are often off-center left to right, which limits the grade even when corners are sharp. See card centering.
  • Look for print lines: thin lines through the holo that came from the factory.

A Gold Star that looks clean at arm's length may still show these flaws up close. Our card condition guide explains how each issue maps to Near Mint, Lightly Played and so on.

Fakes and reprints

Because they're valuable, Gold Stars are counterfeited. Check the font, holo pattern and card stock (how to spot fakes). For expensive copies, graded cards from reputable companies are safer.

Try it on your own cards

If you collected between 2004 and 2007, check every holo for a star next to the name. Scan any Gold Star with Rarefolio to identify it and see its estimated market value, then protect it in a toploader. Read vintage Pokémon cards worth money for more EX-era cards to look for.
