Pikachu Card Value: Rare Pikachu Cards and How to Price Yours

Pikachu card value guide: from the Pikachu Illustrator to promos, Base Set red cheeks, VMAX and illustration rares. How to identify and price your Pikachu.

By Ayoub Farid · · 2 min read

Pikachu has more cards than almost any other Pokémon: regular set cards, countless promos, special art, and some of the rarest cards ever made. Most Pikachu cards are inexpensive, but a handful are valuable. Here's how to tell.

The legends

  • Pikachu Illustrator (1998, Japan): awarded to winners of an illustration contest, with very few copies known. It's widely considered the most valuable Pokémon card; high-grade copies have sold for millions.
  • Trophy Pikachu cards: Japanese tournament prize cards, extremely limited.

You're unlikely to find these in a binder, but they show why Pikachu is so collectible.

Vintage Pikachu worth checking

  • Base Set Pikachu (58/102): a common, but collectors track the "red cheeks" variant, an early printing error where Pikachu's cheeks are red instead of yellow, found on some 1st Edition and shadowless copies.
  • Jungle Pikachu and early promos (such as the Ivy Pikachu illustrated variant).
  • "Birthday Pikachu" and other WOTC black star promos.

Modern Pikachu chase cards

  • Pikachu VMAX rainbow and full art cards
  • Special illustration rares and alt arts featuring Pikachu
  • Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat, the Van Gogh Museum promo (2023), which was in huge demand at release
  • Anniversary and special set Pikachus (Celebrations, 151-themed products and others)

Promos: check the stamp

Pikachu has appeared on many promos: movie releases, events, toy and food promotions. Most are inexpensive; limited event stamps, staff cards and sealed promos can be worth more. Read Pokémon promo card value.

Japanese Pikachu cards

Japan gets exclusive Pikachu promos regularly, often tied to Pokémon Center stores or events. Some are worth more than English cards. See Japanese card values.

How to price your Pikachu

  1. Identify the exact card: set, number, promo code and any stamp.
  2. Check condition: corners, edges, holo scratches.
  3. Compare sold prices for that exact version and condition.

A scanner app speeds up step 1, which is the hardest part with so many similar-looking Pikachu cards.
