Pre-Grading Cards: How to Pick Winners Before You Pay Grading Fees
Pre-grading means screening cards before submitting them. A step-by-step pre-grade checklist, how to sort into tiers, and when paid pre-grading services help.

Grading fees add up fast, and nothing hurts like paying to grade a card that comes back as a 7. Pre-grading is the habit of screening cards carefully before you submit, so only the strongest candidates go in.
Why pre-grade
- Save money: every card you don't send is a fee saved.
- Better results: submissions full of 9s and 10s are worth more than mixed batches.
- Realistic expectations: you'll know which cards are 10 candidates and which are 8s.
A pre-grading checklist
For each card, under bright light:
- Centering front and back: within PSA 10 tolerance (roughly 55/45–60/40 front, 75/25 back)? (centering)
- Corners: all four sharp under magnification?
- Edges: any whitening or chipping on the back? (whitening)
- Surface: scratches, print lines, dents when tilted? (surface flaws)
- Bends: flat when viewed from the side?
- Value check: is the price jump at 9 and 10 big enough? (is it worth grading?)
Sort into tiers
- Tier A – 10 candidates: no flaws found. Submit if the value works.
- Tier B – solid 9s: one minor flaw. Submit only if 9s sell well above raw.
- Tier C – keep raw: visible flaws. Sell or keep raw.
Pack-fresh doesn't mean perfect
Modern cards often have factory flaws: off-centering, print lines, edge roughness. Inspect even cards pulled straight from packs.
Paid pre-grading services
Some shops and services offer pre-grading opinions for a small fee. They can help with expensive cards or if you're new to grading, but no pre-grader can guarantee a grade.
Keep records
Note each card's pre-grade and compare with the actual grade when it returns. You'll quickly learn whether you're too optimistic or too strict.
Which grader for which tier
Tier A cards with a big 10 premium usually go to the grader with the strongest resale market for that card. Tier B cards sometimes make more sense at a cheaper or faster service. Compare options in PSA vs BGS vs CGC and check graded sold prices before choosing.
Try it on your own cards

Frequently asked questions
What is pre-grading?
Inspecting cards for centering, corners, edges and surface before submitting them, to predict grades and avoid paying to grade weak cards.
Is pre-grading accurate?
It's an estimate. Careful pre-grading catches most flaws, but graders can still find issues you missed.
Are pre-grading services worth it?
They can help with expensive cards or for beginners, but they don't guarantee grades.
Should I pre-grade pack-fresh cards?
Yes. New cards often have factory flaws like off-centering and print lines.
