Pokémon cards with a suffix after the name are stronger cards for the game, worth extra prize cards when knocked out. Each era introduced its own mechanic. Knowing them helps you date a card quickly and understand which versions collectors want.
The mechanics by era
| Suffix | Era | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ex (lowercase) | EX era, 2003–2007 | Powerful Pokémon with a shiny border |
| LV.X | Diamond & Pearl, 2007–2010 | Level-up cards placed on a Pokémon |
| EX (uppercase) | Black & White, XY, 2011–2016 | Full-art versions are popular |
| Mega EX / BREAK | XY | Mega Evolutions; BREAK cards turned sideways |
| GX | Sun & Moon, 2017–2019 | One GX attack per game; Tag Team GX cards |
| V / VMAX / VSTAR | Sword & Shield, 2020–2023 | VMAX are huge "Dynamax" cards; VSTAR have a once-per-game power |
| ex (lowercase again) | Scarlet & Violet and later | Including Tera ex and Mega ex |
How to tell them apart quickly
- The suffix is printed right after the Pokémon's name.
- VMAX cards are visually huge, with the Pokémon breaking out of the frame.
- Tag Team GX cards show two or three Pokémon together.
- Modern ex cards have a stylized lowercase "ex" logo.
What collectors pay more for
The suffix alone doesn't make a card valuable; the rarity version does. Each of these mechanics usually comes in several versions:
- Regular (often double rare)
- Full art
- Alternate art (Sword & Shield) or special illustration rare (Scarlet & Violet)
- Rainbow or gold secret rares
The alt arts and special illustrations of popular Pokémon are typically the most valuable. See illustration rares explained.
Era favorites
- EX era ex cards and Gold Stars (Gold Star cards)
- Full-art EX cards from Black & White and XY
- Tag Team GX alternate arts
- Sword & Shield alternate arts (VMAX and V), such as the Evolving Skies Eeveelutions

Frequently asked questions
What does EX mean on a Pokémon card?
EX and ex mark stronger Pokémon that give the opponent extra prize cards when knocked out. Lowercase ex was used 2003–2007 and again from Scarlet & Violet; uppercase EX was used 2011–2016.
Is a VMAX card worth more than a V?
Not necessarily. Value depends on rarity version, Pokémon and demand. Alternate art V cards can be worth more than regular VMAX cards.
What is a GX card?
GX cards from the Sun & Moon era have a powerful GX attack that can be used once per game.
Are all ex cards valuable?
No. Regular ex cards are common in modern sets; full arts, special illustration rares and gold versions are the valuable ones.
